On Friday, November 18th, the Sophomore and Junior class assemblies organized back-to-back events in the Student Center. The Sophomore class planned a “Flow in the Dark” yoga night led by a yoga instructor with glow stick necklaces and bracelets, glow paint, granola bars and fruit, etc. There were two sessions at 7 and 8 o’clock. Downstairs in the Reading Room, the junior class had a build your own Thanksgiving dinner buffet with turkey, mashed potatoes, apple pie, etc. and viewing of the “Friends” Thanksgiving episode. Both assemblies’ events were a success!

This Thanksgiving season, our organization took on managing the Thanksgiving Turkey Drive previously run by the Center for Community Service and Justice. The drive’s objective was to help the GEDCO CARES Food Pantry provide local Baltimore families with a turkey on Thanksgiving. Overall, the Drive raised over $2,000 and was able to provide 140 families with Thanksgiving dinners. Our organization utilized several creative approaches in our efforts to raise the money for the drive, including utilizing an idea from Youtube’s SoulPancake. In late October, SGA set up a “Take a Seat, Make a Friend” ball pit on the quad. Passing students were encouraged to hop in the ball pit with a stranger or a friend and talk about what they’re grateful for, passionate about, or who they look up to. Questions ranged from”Who is someone you feel you should say Thank You to more?” all the way to “Would you survive the Hunger Games?” The main focus for the ball pit was to get people to start thinking about gratitude and what it means not only during the holiday season but throughout the year. It also was to draw attention to the fact that everyone has a story and to kick off […]
